| | Types of Horse Bits
The bit is used with the reins to control the horse by applying pressure to different parts of the horse's mouth and nose. The
different types of bits are designed to apply the pressure where it is required for control. Some bits are kinder (i.e apply less
pressure than others), always use the least pressure required to control the horse.
The snaffle bit is probably the kindest bit you can use. It applies pressure on the tongue, bars and corners of the
mouth. A wider mouthpiece is kinder than a thinner mouthpiece
The Hackamore applies pressure to the poll and nose to encourage the horse to lower his head. The hackamore is a
bitless bridle rather than a bit.
The gag bit is a severe bit in that it has added rings or leather attachments to bring the gag up in the horse's mouth
to give additional leverage. Must be use with extreme caution as it can cause quite severe pain to the horse. It's design is similar to
a snaffle but with attachments for 2 reins on each side.
The Curb Bit have shanks off the mouthpiece to apply leverage to the poll and mouth of the horse. They are usually
unjointed, with either a straight bar or a bar that is arched to take the pressure off the horse's tongue and require a curb chain to
make them safe to use.
The Pelham is designed to apply both pressure and leverage and is also used with 2 reins on either side.
The Double Bridle is used with 2 bits, a snaffle to apply pressure and a curb bit to apply leverage.
